Elemental Nuclear Energy is an advanced nuclear technology company developing the Inherently-Safe Sodium-Cooled Thermal Reactor (“ISTR”) Power System — a compact sodium-cooled small modular reactor (SMR) — together with supercritical CO₂ (sCO₂) power conversion systems and nuclear-powered infrastructure solutions.

Inherently-Safe Sodium-Cooled Thermal Reactor (ISTR)

Elemental Nuclear is developing the ISTR Power System, a compact sodium-cooled small modular reactor (SMR). The ISTR pairs uranium zirconium hydride (U-ZrHx) fuel — the proven fuel form used in TRIGA-type research reactors — with sodium cooling similar to the EBR-II reactor at Idaho National Laboratory. It operates at atmospheric pressure, eliminating high-pressure vessels in an inherently, walk-away-safe system.
